spContent=As advanced technologies have effectively facilitated real-time global communications and convenient global transportations, our globe has become an “Earth Village.” Whether you like it or not, globalization is around us. However, most of us have a close experience with only one or two cultures, short of cross-cultural knowledge and skills. This course will help students understand how cultures affect management practices, identify the similarities and differences across cultures in management practices, and improve capability of effective cross-cultural communication and interaction to meet the urgent need of global collaboration during the pandemic.

课程概述

To tackle the problems resulted from cultural differences in global contexts, international businesses and transnational companies, Cross Cultural Management seeks to understand how national cultures affect management practices, identify the similarities and differences across cultures in various management practices and organizational situations, and increase effectiveness in global management.

The underlying theme of this course is that skills and behaviors that are perceived as effective management characteristics in one culture are not necessarily those that will be effective in another culture. By exploring the cultural dimensions in which specific characteristics are valued differently by different cultures, the students get knowledge of national cultures, understand cultural similarities and differences, and cultivate capability of effective cross-cultural communication. Apart from that, the students would acquire frameworks for assessing how to manage across cultures.

In this course, the students are expected to participate in the interaction actively. Working from relevant topics, students' teams are asked to learn, discuss, and present aspects of management in particular cultures based on their research and/or personal experiences. Students utilize both informal discussions and formal presentations to engage with each other for active learning. The goal of this course is to cultivate students with a global horizon and global competence, helping them prepare for international assignments in global contexts.
