中国高校学生学了十几年的英语，英语水平和能力也得到了很大的提高，能够谈论英语国家基本社会和文化现象，但不少学生无法用英语介绍有关中国文化的知识，即使对一些耳熟能详、家喻户晓的中国文化现象也大都束手无策。《中国文化概论》（An Introduction to Chinese Culture）借用英语这一载体，梳理中国文化的基本常识和精髓，让学生在有限的学时中完成多样化的课堂互动学习活动，学会用英语表达一些基本的中国文化常识。这不仅能增强大家的民族自豪感和爱国热情，而且有助于将来“走出去”所要进行的跨文化交流。鉴于此，《中国文化概论》在线课程建设，对大学阶段英语教学后续课程建设、增强学生的国际交流能力和国际竞争力具有重要现实意义。
本课程采用百分制，包括期末50%，线上学习答题25%，平时课堂表现25%.
学生已具备一定量的专业知识积累，有一定的认知水平，需要学生对本土文化的一些基本特征和主要内容有大致的了解。
