美国文学是高校英语专业核心课程，是美国作家在小说、诗歌、戏剧、散文等领域创作成就的集体体现。各个历史时期的作家基于其所生活的时代、所秉持的立场表达对人的境遇、人与人的关系、人与社会的关系、人与自然的关系等问题的观察和思考。或者说，从某种意义上讲，美国文学就是美利坚民族的心灵史。学习美国文学是了解美利坚民族、了解美利坚文化及其美国国家发展的脉络和走向的重要途径。从本质上说，文学是以语言作为表达媒介的，文学的学习也是语言的体验。本课程集作家评介、作品分析和诗歌赏读为一体，以多种方式呈现美国文学的风貌和魅力。
文学作品是作家基于特定的经历或感悟对于人自身、人与人之间的关系、人与世界的关系和人的生存环境的思考和表达，而一部国别文学史不啻为一个民族的心灵史。美国文学的主体涵盖了自殖民地时期至当代诸多文学流派作家的大量作品，记录了美国文学从无到有、从弱到强的发展历程。本课程的目标旨在使学生通过课程学习熟悉把握美国文学的发展脉络、文艺思潮和诸多不同时期和流派的作家、作品，并通过具体文学作品的阅读和讨论在文学的审美、认知和思辨等诸多方面使学生的能力得到培养和训练，培养学生的人文情怀，并树立一种国际化的视野，从更深层面介入美国文化和历史语境。
本课程总评成绩按以下比例分配：
单元测验成绩占30%，
单元作业成绩占20%，
期末考试成绩占50%。
