《实用英语》是一门面向非英语专业学生开设的公共基础课，同时也是一门面向具有一定英语基础的社会学习者的开放课程。本课程学习内容按照生活、学习、工作岗位所需要的英语知识、能力和素质要求，围绕“大学生活、邀请、工作、饮食、电影、文化、购物、旅行、交通、运动与健康、天气及社交生活”等12个贴近生活和工作实际的主题，一个主题为一个教学单元，每个单元设置4个情景语境，把听、说、读、写、译各项技能的学习与完成英语实用性任务相结合。
本课程旨在培养学生的英语综合应用能力，使其在学习、工作和社会交往中能进行有效英语交际。同时，提高学生的跨文化素养，培养自主学习能力，使学生掌握有效的学习方法和学习策略，为提升学生的就业竞争力及未来的可持续发展打下必要的基础。社会学习者也可在贴近生活与职场的语境中学会英语交流，提升自身英语素质。
本课程加强培养学生的英语综合应用能力，特别是听说能力，使他们在今后学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际，同时，提高学生的综合文化素养和跨文化交际意识，培养学生的学习兴趣和自主学习能力，使学生掌握有效的学习方法和学习策略，为提升学生的就业竞争力及未来的可持续发展打下必要的基础。
